Mission Idea #1: The Long Haul

When it comes to tournaments at the LGS I play at, we always end up playing the same missions over and over. There’s about six of them and they are recycled every month. They get mixed up a bit but still the same old ones we’ve played countless times. I know another player at the shop was working on some missions for the tournaments to use so I thought I’d join the cause. Here’s an idea for a tournament mission, feedback is welcomed.

The Long Haul

Mission
Advance and control up to two objectives while preventing the enemy from doing the same.

Objective
Two objectives will be used, one given to each player. Objectives are placed after deciding deployment zones but before deploying any units, starting with the player that will deploy first. The objectives cannot be placed in either deployment zone or impassable terrain and may not be within 12″ of each other.

Deployment
Short edges are used in this mission. Deploy up to 18″ from a short edge.

Game Length
Standard game length or time, whichever comes first.

Special Rules
Infiltrate, scout, deep strike, reserves, outflank

*Reserves will arrive from your deployment edge, the short edge.
*Outflanking will be done on the long edges, not the short.

Calculate Results
Massacre – Hold both objectives
Major – Hold the enemy objective with the enemy not holding your objective
Minor – Hold your objective with the enemy not holding their own
Draw – Any other condition

Battle Point Modifiers
+1 destroying all enemy troops
+1 having more troops in the enemy deployment zone than in yours
+1 destroying all enemy transports (including Drop Pods & Mycenetic Spores), while having at least one of your transports left
+1 if you had a unit arrive from reserves and it is holding the enemy objective at the end of the game
+1 if the only enemy units left are in their deployment zone

I tried to write this up using the type of format we currently use. Hopefully I didn’t forget anything, though I’m sure I did. We use the MMMD system (massacre, major, minor and draw). On top of it we generally have five battle points you can score in addition for a potential score of 25 points each mission.

About Thor

I began playing 40K in 2006 and have been an avid player and hobbyist since then. Blogging has become my outlet for all those random thoughts regarding the game.

This mission should not use outflank as the narrow board gives those units to large of a threat range. Deployment should also be larger perhaps 24 to 30 inches so the farthest someone to go is not so much larger than in the normal pitched battle (36 inches from deployment to opponent baseline). At 18 inches a unit might have to travel 54 inches to get to the opponents base.

This is something I’ve been considering. I think 24″ deployment would work well.

I like the idea of keeping outflank but a change may be in order the more I think about it. What about changing outflank to use the table corners for arrival? So, 1-2 would be left corner in the enemy deployment zone, 3-4 right corner in their zone, and 5-6 you pick. It would still give you a reason to outflank but not as powerful as the original idea above. With the objectives being in the center board area, outflanking wouldn’t let you jump right to an objective but instead be used to try and unseat your enemy’s back lines.

I wrote up something similar about a year ago:

It is just a general deployment type to be used in standard missions it uses only a 12 inch nomans land in the center since shooty armies can take advantage of the extra depth and it modifies all movement from reserves for outflank and similar codex special rules (wolf scouts, ork commandos with special character).

Thanks for the link. Interesting…I may have to borrow your outflank concept if you don’t mind.
