One of my goals for the year was to really focus on the quality of my painting and to challenge myself to paint new and interesting things. The bronze spawn competition at the stand off really helps me find something different to work on from the day in and day out of my armies. So a few weeks ago I decided I was going to make a run at the 25mm category of the bronze spawn. I had a lot of trouble trying to figure out what I wanted to do, the one thing I kept coming back to was that I wanted to paint yellow.
I have heard such terrible things about it I wanted to see what it was all about. Hell I had already painted a ton of white scars, can’t be worse than that. What I found is that it isn’t but it sure helps to have an airbrush to get down the base layers.
So I knew at this point I wanted to do an imperial fist. I kept going back and forth between building and converting a model up or using an existing model. An in the end the judges will get to decide but I really didn’t want to buy a specific model just for this so I used something I have been meaning paint for a long time. Back in the day I picked up two of the 25 year anniversary space marine models. I thought it was pretty neat, but my lord I loathe fine base at this point. There were so many small bubbles and miscasts that I couldn’t catch until I got into the gritty detail of the model. I am not sure what it takes to get a good finecast model but I am glad I have only purchased 4 of them. 3 of them have had problems to the point of needing replacement and the other I have never opened.
In all the pictures this guy is a crimson fist but their parent chapter is far more cool I think. The model painted up great aside from finding all of the bubbles. Most of them I think are in such discrete locations I don’t think they will detract greatly from the model. I had a blast painting him and I think I can say he is the best paint job of any model I have done. Well ‘all I really have I just wanted to share this guy before throwing him into the crucible of competition this weekend.

Very nice and clean paint job Warren! I haven’t had any luck with finecast(crap) either.
There is going to be a lot of really nice painted stuff this year. We have 6 guys from Dorka that are all top notch painters and a whole bunch of Mainers as usual.
It is gonna be tough competition so any award received will be earned that is for sure.

Great job. You make yellow look easy, of course that airbrush helps a ton getting down the base coat, but still.
My criticisms is the lack of highlights on the yellow and a lack of shading on that yellow. I tend to hit yellows with either a red wash or sepia wash, depending on the yellow, for shading. Highlighting on a yellow that bright I would probably just go straight for white and simply hit the high points and call it good. Still a great looking model of course.
it is edge highlighted with several layers of thinned white over the entire model. It is not a high contrast but it does not come across as well in the photos.
I see it now. Yeah, no doubt it’s easier to spot in person.
Looks nice and smooth. Yellow is a hard color to photograph, especially when you’re attempting to capture shading and highlights.
The pics did reveal two slips on the model though: you have two small dots of black from the power cable on the rear of the model’s right leg that crept into the yellow, and one small dash of yellow inside the grille of his right backpack vent (image IFBack shows it dead center in the middle of the shot). A couple quick touchups and you should be golden.
thanks I saw the yellow on the grill in the picture but missed the one from the cable I will take care of it.
