Tips for New Players: Avoiding Common Pitfalls
Our shop is seeing a good amount of new players, which is awesome. I really enjoy playing against new players because they have a real excitement for the game, it’s all new to them, like when you bought your first new car. I also enjoy, as crazy as this sounds, teaching new players. I’m not out to win every game I play and so I’ll point out moves to them that they are overlooking or tell them when something is a bad idea. I also let players learn by mistakes since it really is the best way to learn. Anyway, I wanted to put out there some pitfalls I see a lot of new players make and help them avoid those mistakes.
Orks – Tankbustas
When the latest Ork codex came out there were a ton of Ork players who quickly dismissed Tankbustas on account of the glory hog special rule. The rule states that a Tankbusta must shoot at a vehicle if it can see one and assault a vehicle if it can see one. Yes, I said assault a vehicle if it can see one, so you park a Rhino 20″ away then the Tankbustas will attempt to assault it. The rule is like a modified version of rage.
Orks – Trukk Boyz Tactica
Orks – ‘ard Boyz Tactica
An ‘ard Boy costs 4pts more than a normal Boy, which is a pretty significant price increase. For every 3 ‘ard Boyz you buy you could have 2 more normal Boyz, IE: 3 ‘ard Boyz or 5 regular Boyz. So, is the 4+ save worth the big price increase? In my opinion, yes they are worth it, you just can’t use them like you would normal Boyz or you’re going to waste your points and then they won’t be worth it.
Orks – Stormboyz Overview
At a Glance
One of the first things you’ll notice is a Stormboy is twice the cost of a normal Boy and wonder if there’s justification to that cost. I feel they are worth every point if they are used appropriately. Stormboyz are normal Boyz with rokkit packs, so they have the same 6+ save and stats. This means you can’t just throw them at your opponent, you need to be selective in who they attack and when. I feel any list, be it KoS (Kult of Speed), footsloggers, mekanized, etc., can benefit from this unit as I’ll explain.
A Guide to Playing 40K Faster
As someone who plays some very quick games and some very long ones, I wanted to share some things I’ve learned during my years of playing 40K that help speed up a game. Newer players will most likely find this more useful than the vets out there but hopefully there’s something in here for the vets too.
Legion of the Damned
It seems everyone loves Legion of the Damned (LoD), for their fluff but many have reservations about fielding them. Many argue that for the points you get more use out of Sternguard. Being someone who also enjoys their fluff and loves the new models for them, well I had to give them a shot. Now, when I write tacticas they aren’t written to tell you how to use something, instead they are generally more my experience with a unit and my thoughts. I’ll never claim to know the absolute best way to do anything but I do enjoy sharing my views.
