Gauntlet #1: Bench Warmer

Most every blog has its shtick, right? Well, here’s my conceived one, the Gauntlet. The goal here is to stimulate thoughtful assessment of a situation, a strategy, an idea, whatever it happens to be. You can’t look at things in a new way if you don’t ever try.

40K Zombies: A Rant

40K ZombieI have a few pet peeves (a few is putting it lightly), but foremost amongst those is the unthinking person. This applies to anything but I’m applying it to 40K today. The zombie is the type of person who reads things and takes it all at face value, never challenging the advice or truly understanding it. This person said doing X is the best way to accomplish Y, that’s what I’ll do! The zombie may be smart enough to understand the rationale behind the advice but they lack the mental capacity to take the advice and adapt it as needed. In general, they are unthinking individuals who play the game as a set of instructions and not as a game that tests the skill of two opponents.

Does Size Really Matter?

Games SizeTastyTaste over at Blood of Kittens has been running a series called In Defense of 1500 that I’ve found interesting. When I got into playing 40K with my friends we were always playing 1,500 games, sometimes we’d go up to 1,750 or 1,850. Initially I was building my army and couldn’t do very large games. However, after I had my Orks built up to a relatively large army we still continued doing smaller games, occasionally tossing down a 2,000 for the fun of it.

Gamers Just Wanna Have Fun

FunWhat constitutes fun inevitably varies player to player but the the truth is that when we play we do want to have fun, well unless you’re a masochist. It’s easy to get caught up in the competitive nature of things. Be that besting your favorite enemy or winning a tournament. Some times you just need to step back and relax. It’s just a game, albeit a game we all obsess about beyond what probably passes for healthy, but a game none-the-less.

The Whiner

The whiner comes in many varieties. So many in fact it’s hard to nail them all down. Instead I’ll focus on the primary ones I see but even this is a small sampling.

The Inner Voice

Alright folks, I’ve tried to be good and suppress that inner voice but I can’t do it. When I decided to kick off this blog with some of my 40K ramblings I figured I’d be a good boy and keep that voice inside my head quiet. I didn’t want to scare away readers, I wanted to build a base of readers instead. Well, the voice is winning out. I rant and I enjoy it. I try to not be too dick’ish about my rantings and try to keep it founded and not completely off the wall. I don’t rant for the sake ranting…normally.

Tournaments – Win Big or Go Home

TournamentsI’m far from an experienced tournament goer since I’ve only played in five of them and all of them local. That being said, at my FLGS we’re all discussing our current method of scoring, from army composition scores to the very core of determining the overall winner. I won’t touch on army comp scores, that’s a hot topic for another day. Most of the discussion has been around determining the overall winner. The method we currently use theis  massacre, major win, minor win and draw system (MMMD).

Games for Kids – Games Workshop’s Trend?

Games Workshop for KidsAllow me to rant here. I began playing 40K in the last year of 4th edition, so I had enough games under my belt to know the rules. When 5th came out it seemed the world went up in arms saying that it was designed with kids in mind, dumbed down rules and a simpler system. These are the same words that have been ushered almost any time Games Workshop decides to do a full version update. Now that Fantasy’s version update is looming I see people hoping it won’t go the way of 40K 5th and become geared towards kids, a simplified system that’s easy to learn.

Must Have Ork Wargear

Wargear: Ork TechnologyIn every game I play there is always certain wargear that units have to have. I strongly advocate mixing up your lists as you don’t want people to expect the same thing out of you each game, but when it comes to wargear there are simply must have items for me.

My Top 40K Sites

Top 40K Sites: WinnerWe all have our favorite 40K sites, those sites we visit daily, weekly, or whatever your free time allows for. I wanted to share my top 40K sites and maybe you’ll find some new favorites. I’m not going to list these in any particular order since it would hurt my brain to really figure out which rank where, they’re all great sites! Without further ado.

When the Planets Align

Some times you wonder if all those beatings you are receiving on the table are finally going to manifest into something more than bruised pride. You tell yourself that with each loss you are learning, and you should be unless your an egomaniac and blame everything but yourself for the loss. So you take another loss, shake hands, collect your army and think about the match and analyze it pondering where your mistakes were, how you could have played it better. You take those lessons in loss to heart, evaluate your list, adjust your tactics and hope the next game fairs better for you.

Games Workshop – Downloadable Content

Games Workshop: Digital BooksKumui and I have chatted about this at great length over the years and it’s not a new topic by any means. Should Games Workshop make their rules and/or codices freely available? Yes, they should.

Speed Freeks

Early on when I started Orks I knew I didn’t want to push around over 100 models and I quickly started going Speed Freek style. Back then Orks had clan rules and specialist rules for Speed Freeks and Feral Orks but I didn’t actually play a Speed Freek list. I just emulated the style because I was learning the game and Orks and didn’t want to confuse myself with a specialist list. This type of list was pretty unforgiving in 4th edition where glancing could destroy a vehicle, you had entanglement checks for ruined vehicles and there were three different charts for vehicle damage. As much as I enjoyed the ease of movement and approach to the list, it wasn’t the easiest of lists to play.

Style, You Have Any?

If you’ve been following my blog then you know I’ve been working on figuring out a style with my Marines that works for me. I can’t say with 100% certainty that I’ve found it but I feel I’m on the path at least. With my Orks I play pretty much a Speed Freek list because that’s a style that suits me. The key thing here is doing something that suits you.

Get at it ye Gitz!

Played at the FLGS last night and ran into a situation which I fell victim to and no doubt others out there do to. I do this more often than I should so this is just as much making you all aware as reprimanding myself for it (bad Thor!).

Experiences Against the New Blood Angels

Blood Angels: VampiresI’ve now played three games against the new Blood Angels with my Orks. I have not seen everything the codex has to offer of course but I’ve certainly seen some of the key units and rules in those games.
