January Team Tourney: 1250 Point Tau List

TauTeam tournaments are always fun. I like being partnered up with a random person. The idea of not knowing what half your army is going to consist of prior to entering battle is enormously challenging. Four generals combining and pitting brain power and list power over three games of Warhammer 40k generally results in a hilariously good time for all involved.

Quick Report: Another Team Tournament Practice

Last night we got in another practice game for the upcoming team tournament at Crossroad Games. The tournament will be 1,250 per-player and has a restricted forge organization: 1 HQ, 0-1 Elites, 1-3 Troops, 0-1 Fast Attack, 0-1 Heavy Support. You can double up one of the 0-1 slots. Oh, and it’s random partners.

January 1,250 Team Tournament: Necron List

NecronWhenever we have a team tournament I can’t help but consider fielding my Necron army. I love these crazy robots and in a team environment I can hope to get paired with a partner that can cover the inherit weakness of the Necrons. Then again, I was once paired with Tau, definitely not covering my assault weakness, and we did well since we blasted everything before it reached us. Of course, it was a team of Orks and Space Wolves that finally did us in but we had a hell of a day regardless.

December 1,850 Tournament Report

Tournament: BearLet’s dive right in, shall we? So, I ran a this Shrike list I have been toying with. My first game was against ShinyRhino/Todd the Goalie. He was running a biker army with Khan in a Command Squad and a Librarian with Assault Marines. The mission was spearhead deployment with objectives placed in the unoccupied quarters. To win you needed more objectives and kill points. I got first turn and picked the quarter with a building to put my Devs in while forcing him into open terrain, though he had some walls to hide behind, which he did. I took up firing positions to be able to hit him as he came around the walls.

Quick Report: Ready for the Tournament

Tournament PreparationLast night I got to test out my Shrike list; thanks to those who’ve helped me refine it. I was hoping to get in two games since I got to the LGS earlier than usual, but Murphy’s Law was in effect and I only got in one game and started that later than I wanted.

1,850 Shrike List – Final Testing

This Saturday is the 1,850 tournament at the LGS and Wednesday will be the last chance I get to try out the list before that. With the feedback I’ve received on my previous posts and my own tweaking, here’s what I hope is the final list. The list revolves around Shrike.

Fast & Furious 500pt Tournament List

Tournament: Fast and FuriousThe LGS is holding a 500pt tournament starting this coming Wednesday. Each game will be one hour and the following criteria is in place for the force org: HQ 1, Elites 0-1, Troops 1, Fast Attack 0-1, Heavy Support 0-1. You can have one slot be two choices except for HQ. This is pretty standard for us when we do small games like this and I enjoy how it works out.

Preparing for the 1,850 December Tournament

December TournamentWith some great feedback on my previous Shrike list post, I played an 1,850 game last night. We have a tournament coming up in a few weeks and this is my intended list. The only changes from the previously modified list is putting two flamers in the Assault Squad, which freed up 5pts (dropped the plasma pistol), that I spend on a combat shield for that Sarge. Here it is:

1,850 Shrike List v2.0 (Updated)

ShrikeAfter taking two losses last week with my first version of a Shrike list, I’ve made a few small changes. I feel the list itself was pretty solid, nothing is ever perfect though, and with some practice things will smooth out. So, here’s an 1,850 list that I’m hoping to get to try out this Wednesday.

Twas the Night Before Thanksgiving

And I got stomped. Played two games last night at the LGS and was trying out my Shrike list. I had swapped out the Predator in that list for Scouts in a Storm, in the 2K list, and my 1,850 list was that same minus the Scouts and Storm.

Hurricane Bolter on an Ironclad Dreadnought

Hurricane BolterWhen I first got the Marine codex and fell in love with the Ironclad I wondered why anyone would put a hurricane bolter on it. You trade off the three attacks for two and three attacks is an appealing stat. Having the dreadnought arm still gives you a weapon with it, so you still have two ranged weapons and you have two arms to smash things with.

Space Marines: A Rough 2,000pt Shrike List

ShrikeYesterday I was thinking out loud about some of my thoughts on a Marine list and my need to find something interesting. One of the special characters I mentioned was Shrike and so I’ve since created a rough idea of a list with Shrike. Now, personally I’m a big fan of risky lists. Playing a list that has minimal risks in it bores me, IE: standing back and shooting all day long. However, I also don’t want a glass cannon either. I don’t mind if the list is a bit one-dimensional as long as it doesn’t evaporate if things go awry. With that in mind here is my rough idea of a list with Shrike:

Mission: Recovery v1.02

The final mission we played in the tournament also needs some minor adjustments. Of all the missions this one seemed to play out pretty well with two massacres, one major, three minors and one draw. It was also the last mission, so pairings should have been spot on.

Mission: Attack and Defend v1.2

As noted in the update to King of the Hill, this mission also needs some minor tweaking, actually one tweak should do it I feel. This mission also saw more massacres than I like seeing, though not so bad as King of the Hill. Attack and Defend was also the first round mission in the tournament, where you expect a higher rate of massacres with random pairings, so I don’t want to go overboard considering that.

Mission: King of the Hill v2.0

I took home the score sheets from the past tournament to evaluate my missions and this one is in desperate need of some balancing. Every match that day except for one ended in a massacre. The biggest problem was the single objective, almost guaranteeing the first to it would score a massacre. The big change below is adding the ability to score for holding table quarters. I figure this should help offset getting second turn or just not being fast enough to reach the center objective first to hold and defend it.  I also raised the massacre requirement to 3x your opponent’s score instead of 2.5x their score.

40K Rules Quiz #8: Universal Special Rules, Buildings & Ruins and Missions

QuizOne of the easiest ways to become a better 40K player is to know the rules inside and out. Even veterans will re-read the rules to freshen up and make sure they know their stuff. So, I thought it would be fun to do a 40K quiz. I’ll chop the rulebook into sections and post a quiz for each. I’m aiming to quiz on the more obscure stuff and by obscure I mean items you may have overlooked, not known or always been fuzzy on. Some questions will be easy but hopefully overall the quizzes will be a challenge to anyone taking them. Oh, goes without saying but don’t use the rulebook to look up the answers. I want to test knowledge, not ability to research.
