Weekend Wrap-up: Paint and Play
I had some stuff I wanted to post up over the week but for one reason or another it never happened. So, introducing the Weekend Wrapup, where I post random stuff from the week that I forgot about, wasn’t really worth posting on its own, or I just feel like tossing in.
My Change of View on Army Composition
Those who read regularly know that attending tournaments is still pretty new for me and I’ve only attended ones held at the LGS. The first one I attended was overwhelming. I show up last minute with an army I threw together in 10 minutes and get handed a scoring sheet. I then spent the day figuring out what the hell I was doing. Ok, so there’s a massacre, major and minor win and the possibility of a draw, all worth varying points. Oh, there’s these bonus points…how does this all work? Sportsmanship and painting, easy enough to figure out. Army composition score…what’s this?

Your Expectations of a 40K Game
This is a bit of a spin off from a topic on a forum I frequent in which someone was asking about reputation ruining. He was asking what is it that ruins the reputation of a player in your eyes, IE: cheesy lists, power gaming, etc. This got me thinking about the other side of that question, your expectations of a game. If someone bringing a tournament list to a friendly game ruins your experience and perception of that player then it’s because it went against your gaming expectations.
Dawn of War II – The Last Stand and the Morons Who Play It
First, as much as I enjoy the DoW series (Dawn of War), I don’t normally do ranked matches or public games. I did for a while but the fact is that I’m not great at RTS (real time strategy), games. The genre for me has always been more about fun than it has anything serious. I have fun playing as Space Marines or Orks and just smashing stuff but I also get annoyed being manhandled by 13 year old kids who spend all their free time playing.

Reading Comprehension
Hi. My name is Thor and I have a problem. I fail at reading comprehension.
The first step is admitting you have a problem, right?
Forums, Blogs or Both?
Last month Blood of Kittens put up an article, Meat for Meta: 40k forums a thing of the Past?, and lately I’ve been thinking about it more. Let’s travel back in time a bit, the year is 1999. I’m running a clan/guild called Destroyers of Hope. I want us to be able to quickly and easily communicate with one another and so I find a forum software service called ezBoard. I set it up and we are posting away on the forums. Shortly after I find something called phpBB and I install that and we use that for our forums over the hosted solution. We are competing in FPS ladders on various sites and the forums are a huge asset for posting when matches are, who can make them, last minute changes, etc.
40K Zombies
I have a few pet peeves (a few is putting it lightly), but foremost amongst those is the unthinking person. This applies to anything but I’m applying it to 40K today. The zombie is the type of person who reads things and takes it all at face value, never challenging the advice or truly understanding it. This person said doing X is the best way to accomplish Y, that’s what I’ll do! The zombie may be smart enough to understand the rationale behind the advice but they lack the mental capacity to take the advice and adapt it as needed. In general, they are unthinking individuals who play the game as a set of instructions and not as a game that tests the skill of two opponents.
Does Size Really Matter?
TastyTaste over at Blood of Kittens has been running a series called In Defense of 1500 that I’ve found interesting. When I got into playing 40K with my friends we were always playing 1,500 games, sometimes we’d go up to 1,750 or 1,850. Initially I was building my army and couldn’t do very large games. However, after I had my Orks built up to a relatively large army we still continued doing smaller games, occasionally tossing down a 2,000 for the fun of it.
Gamers Just Wanna Have Fun
What constitutes fun inevitably varies player to player but the the truth is that when we play we do want to have fun, well unless you’re a masochist. It’s easy to get caught up in the competitive nature of things. Be that besting your favorite enemy or winning a tournament. Some times you just need to step back and relax. It’s just a game, albeit a game we all obsess about beyond what probably passes for healthy, but a game none-the-less.

The Whiner
The whiner comes in many varieties. So many in fact it’s hard to nail them all down. Instead I’ll focus on the primary ones I see but even this is a small sampling.
The Inner Voice
Alright folks, I’ve tried to be good and suppress that inner voice but I can’t do it. When I decided to kick off this blog with some of my 40K ramblings I figured I’d be a good boy and keep that voice inside my head quiet. I didn’t want to scare away readers, I wanted to build a base of readers instead. Well, the voice is winning out. I rant and I enjoy it. I try to not be too dick’ish about my rantings and try to keep it founded and not completely off the wall. I don’t rant for the sake ranting…normally.
Tournaments – Win Big or Go Home
I’m far from an experienced tournament goer since I’ve only played in five of them and all of them local. That being said, at my FLGS we’re all discussing our current method of scoring, from army composition scores to the very core of determining the overall winner. I won’t touch on army comp scores, that’s a hot topic for another day. Most of the discussion has been around determining the overall winner. The method we currently use theis massacre, major win, minor win and draw system (MMMD).
Games for Kids – Games Workshop’s Trend?
Allow me to rant here. I began playing 40K in the last year of 4th edition, so I had enough games under my belt to know the rules. When 5th came out it seemed the world went up in arms saying that it was designed with kids in mind, dumbed down rules and a simpler system. These are the same words that have been ushered almost any time GW decides to do a full version update. Now that Fantasy’s version update is looming I see people hoping it won’t go the way of 40K 5th and become geared towards kids, a simplified system that’s easy to learn.

Must Have Ork Wargear
In every game I play there is always certain wargear that units have to have. I strongly advocate mixing up your lists as you don’t want people to expect the same thing out of you each game, but when it comes to wargear there are simply must have items for me.
