Chaos Space Marines: 1,850 Tournament List

I apologize for kind of spamming lists lately. I get this way before a big tournament. The tournament, Standish Standoff, is in two weeks and I have yet to get a list that I’m really happy with. My Khorne Daemonkin need some more time to grow (IE: cash for units), before I can really consider using them at this large annual tournament I’m attending. I just keep growing frustrated with my current limitations/collection. So, what I’ve decided to do is run my Chaos Space Marines, an army I own at a reasonable size. I also decided to run my Warpsmith list I enjoy. It tends to play relatively competitively without being spammy and I have fun playing it. Who doesn’t love big daemonic robots? Here’s the list.

HQ

  • Grimtech (Warpsmith) – Mechatendrils, Power Axe, Mark of Nurgle, Aura of Dark Glory, Blight Grenades, Melta Bombs, Burning Brand of Skalathrax

Elites

  • Deathcry (Helbrute) – Twin-linked Lascannon, Missile Launcher
  • Hellscream (Helbrute) – Multi-melta, Power Fist

Troops

  • Vengeance (Chaos Space Marines) x 9 – Icon of Vengeance, Plasma Gun x 1

I’ve run versions of this list quite a few times and have always done pretty well with it. The only real difference with this over my previous versions is giving Grimtech (Warpsmith), the Burning Brand of Skalathrax (torrent flamer – S4, AP3). I lose the bolt pistol for the extra attack in close combat but this is an HQ where I avoid combat when possible. He does well enough in assault but at two wounds, and my Warlord, it’s risky.

The list is pretty straight forward. It’s more of a shooting list than I usually run but it has plenty of potential for close combat. It will have some tough match-ups but I have no doubt that this list’s tough matches will be less so than what I was trying to do with Khorne Daemonkin.

The Warpsmith will join the Vengeance Squad (plasma). That unit will generally hang back a bit so Grimtech can jump out to repair if needed and sit on objectives. With the Burning Brand and the harness flamer, he can lay down some wounds if things get too close and the harness melta as needed. I rarely use the Machine Curse but it’s an option if out of melta range. I had thought about putting him into the melta squad but since I want him back from the front-lines a bit, and that melta squad will be in the thick of it, I figured the plasma squad made more sense.

  • I like the list. It’s diverse and utilize alot of units that are out of flavor. I usually run my Helbrute in a Mayhem Pack. That way I know I’ll get them into range. Especially multi-melta is hard for me, I never get them in range if I don’t Deep Strike.

    Burning brand is brilliant. I love it. I started to run it on MoT terminator lord but now I prefer my unmarked biker sorcerer. If you can get Enfeeble, oh man, he’ll just kill everything.

    I would try and get something more to threaten your opponent’s backfield. Either by adding another Helbrute for a Mayhem Pack or trying to squeeze some other DS-threat in. Melta Raptors?

    • I love the Mayhem Pack but don’t have another Helbrute. I’ve proxied one in to try it and it’s great but can’t be doing that at a tournament.

      I’ve used the Burning Brand a few times and thought it was great. With blight grenades and the Burning Brand, someone really has to choose what charges into those Marines.

      I have Raptors but they are maybe 33% painted and I couldn’t pull it off in time honestly. The only real way to get them in there would be dropping some mech units, which sort of defeats the theme, or maybe going 5-man on CSM squads but that’s risky on my only troops.

        Question; In order to get a Mayhem Pack, what do you drop to be able to fit another Helbrute?

        • You mean, if I was going to try and fit him into the list above? I ultimately didn’t, but if I were to, then there’s a few options. Drop the Defiler and use the left over points for a squad or two of Cultists. Alternatively, drop the CSM squads down to 5 each for points.

            Alright, that sounds like a plan, been playing this list for awhile, just having abit of problem with Tau’s Backfield, that’s Why I’m thinking about doing a Mayhem Pack

            • Tau is rough. They can handle most anything that deep strikes in, but a Mayhem Pack could work. The trick is giving them more targets than they can deal with. For example, deep striking in Obliterators and a Mayhem Pack. Maybe have some outflanking Bikes with a Lord using a Steed of Slaanesh. Stuff like that, but the hard part is still having enough on the table that they aren’t leveling you while you wait on your reserves.

                Yeah that’s what I thought about doing with a Mayhem Pack, but as you say, having enough on the table while waiting for reserves will be abit tricky… I guess I just have to try some games and see how it goes.

                    One more question, how did you get Melta Bombs and Blight Grenades on the Warpsmith?

                    • He’s got the Mark of Nurgle, which allows him to take the Blight Grenades. The Special Issue wargear lets you take one of each, so you can have both types of grenades.

    Is there no one out can borrow a hellbrute from for the tournie?

      I’m sure I could borrow one but we get scored at this tournament for painting so I don’t want something in there that I didn’t paint.

    Hello, Nice list!

    Old post I know but two questions:
    1. How did it go?
    2. How did you deal with Flyers? (Army list does not have any AA)

    • It didn’t go all that great for me. The list needed more refinement, but I wasn’t able to make the tournament I had made the list for, so it never got worked on after.

      The list does OK with flyers. It does have the Heldrake for Vector Strike, which isn’t bad, though not great. The Forgefiend with the Hades Autocannons proves alright for flyers as well (volume of fire). Mostly though, if I have to deal with flyers, then I get the Obliterators into that 12″ range to utilize their twin-linked weapons, like melta and plasma. So, it can cope with flyers if it has to, but not its strong suit.

    senseless, no redundancy of vp2, heldrake is useless due to the no ap2 and othe rstuff that can do saturation for less point and also start at turn 1.

    • Well, I appreciate the comments, even if they are a bit harsh.

      The list was mostly for fun, not super competitive play. If I was trying for more competitive then I would have made changes to this list. It was just meant to be a list I would enjoy playing, and maybe win a game.
