April Assault 40K Tournament – Kamui’s Review

April Assault TournamentHello all,

I attended the April Assault at Crossroad Games in Standish, Maine on Saturday.  It was a hobby focused event with heavy emphasis on soft scores.  I figured I’d post my impressions of the day as a review for those of you who are interested and feedback for those who hosted the event.  For those of you who would like to see the details of the event you can download the event packet here.

Kamui’s Workbench: A Tale of Two Speeders continued

We can buff that out...

Hello all,

A few weeks back I picked up a couple of land speeders to add some mobility to my Reavers (Space Wolves.)  I got them cheap on eBay but they were in need of some repairs.  For those of you who haven’t seen them (and those of you who have a memory like mine and have forgotten,) you can see how they started here and how the repairs went here.

I’ve since finished the builds and have begun painting them.  I want to field them as Typhoons for the April Assault this weekend so I built some Typhoon Missile Launchers for them using styrene sheet.  While I’m posting WIP shots I thought I’d include a mini-tutorial for them.

40K Tournament: April Assault

April AssaultAs I’ve mentioned a few times in previous posts, Crossroad Games in Standish, Maine is hosting a 32-player 40K tournament this month on the 21st called the April Assault. It’s a hobby oriented event, which means aside from battle points earned for the day you will also be scored in painting, sportsmanship, army composition and even a pub quiz. Understandably it may not be for everyone as this is a big deviation from our normal tournaments but that’s exactly the point, doing something different.

Kamui’s Workbench-Slacking on the pictures!

Hello all,

Here’s my second week without pictures to update you on my progress.  Things have been hectic, and I’ve been spending most of my weekends out of town the last few weeks.  For now I’ll catch you up on my progress and try to post pictures later on.

Battle Report: Spectre Studio “New” Character

This is a Spectre Studio’s different style video Battle Report by Spectre Senence. What’s the change? Well I have played this hobby awhile and I enjoy playing with a fun personality into my armies. This stems from decades as a Dungeon Master. So I decided I want to improve the entertaining value of Spectre Studio’s battle reports without sacrificing too much content so they hold no tactica value. So the attempt is to infused some of my crazy concepts into the armies I play while filming these BatReps.

This past November the shop ran The Standish Standoff, a large tournament with lots and lots of goodies and prizes. The April Assault is a ‘mini’ Standoff and mini only refers to a slightly smaller prize pool and goodie bag but not attendance.

The Standish Standoff: Tournament Wrap-up

The Standish Standoff - Fate's AngelsAfter months of preparing for it it’s almost sad to see it go. My FLGS, Crossroad Games, hosted its first ever annual large 40K tournament on Saturday. It was a 30 person event with three rounds using soft scores, which is uncommon for us. Our monthly events are straight battle points but this new annual event we wanted to create a more friendly and hobby oriented event. Many of us spent the past four months getting ready for it. Tables had to be built, more terrain created, old tables and terrain repaired, etc. It’s been a long road but the payoff was well worth it.

Battle Report: FLGS October Tournament

Crossroad Games TournamentThis month my FLGS ran a 2K tournament. Normally in our tournaments we put all the entry fees into the prize pool but this month it was a benefit for a store regular who was diagnosed with cancer. Originally it was to be 75% to the benefit and 25% to the players but GW decided to do prize support for us allowing us to give 100% to this gentleman, which is awesome. The downside is that it would seem a fair amount of people didn’t want to bother thinking the prize pool was insubstantial and we had one of our worst showings ever. It’s sad really. I guess some people care more about the prize support than they do playing some games for fun and benefiting a man with a life threatening illness.

Weekly Wrap-up: Fall Fun

I put up a new Rok Da Vote asking if you think the 40K blogosphere is becoming stagnant. I put up a short article explaining my thoughts on it. If you haven’t voted yet then here’s your chance.

Tournament: Battle for the Burbs Report

Tournament - Battle for the BurbsSaturday, March 12th, was the Battle for the Burbs, an even put on by the Dorkamorka club in Watertown, MA. It was a 1,750 tournament for 30 players, though only 24 made it, that was heavy on the soft scores. Normally I’m all about keeping soft scores out of a tournament in determining the winner but really I thought it was a nice change of pace. Sometimes you have to mix it up to keep things fresh and fun. Six of us from the LGS Crossroad Games headed down together for a kick ass day of gaming.

Weekly Wrap-up: What a Whirlwind

The week has flown by; no complaints here.

The latest Rok Da Vote closed out and the results can be seen here. I’ve been slacking though and haven’t put up the next poll. Haven’t yet figured out what to put up.

Weekly Wrap-up: Always Something to Work on

I’ve finally, I think, completed the tournament software I had been creating for use the Crossroad Games. It’s pretty simple really. You add your players and create matches. It has a random match pairing feature and a point based match pairing feature to easily set up matches with a single click. It tracks the points for each match and runs a total for each player so at the end of the day it’s all there, no messing around. It also tracks paint scores and sportsmanship if being used. The cool part, as a player, is it’s all publicly accessible so you can see how you did for any tournament that was entered into the system. This software should save us a lot of time at the tournaments and get us rolling and out of there sooner.

Campaign Report: 2,000 for Week #4

Last night was another game in our ongoing campaign. It was a standard 2,000 game with the exception of being able to shoot to other tables from your table. You had to have range to do this, which naturally limited who could even bother trying. We played capture and control with spearhead deployment. I was playing Ming and his Ultramarines and I played Fate’s Angels, my Marines.
