Progress has been a bit lower than I’d like but progress is progress. The first unit always takes longer since I’m working out the technique I plan to use for the entire army and refining my approach. That being said, the 10-man Veteran Squad is now complete. I should have some squad pictures up this week. I’ve primed 10 Tact Marines and 5 Devastators also. I’ll be moving on to painting 10 Assault Marines this week and hopefully with the technique figured out it will go much faster.
Test Figure
Here’s the test model I was working on. Joe wanted mostly black with some gold trim. The bolter isn’t done yet though and I have a purity seal to put over the hole in the backpack but otherwise it’s “finished”. Joe is having me just do the black and gold while he’ll take care of the smaller details once he has the figures. The black has three shades of gray for highlights though it’s hard to pick them out in the shots. I wanted to get some shots quickly this morning before work while I had light so they aren’t great.
I managed to get the last 10 Tact Marines assembled this weekend, 2 Rhinos base coated, 5 Command Squad base coated and 10 Veterans base coated with one test model just about complete. Now that I’m on to painting I think things are going to start flying along.
After a long, long (did I say long?), time of putting together a chapter worth of Marines we’re just about ready to start putting a brush to the models. This weekend I’ll get a test model done and track down the beast that seemed to have hidden my camera on me and slay it so that I can get shots up of the test model.
I’ve completed assembling two 5-man Devastator squads and the 6-man Red Scorpions. All I have left to finish is 10 Tactical Marines and 10 Assault Marines. I’ll be starting on the Assault Marines tonight. If things go well then this weekend I’ll have all the assembling completed and moving on to painting. It’s a week behind what I was aiming for but Easter took out a chunk of my time to work on the figures.
The past two weeks have been crazy but things should be back to normal, meaning wrapping up the assembly stage of Joe’s figures. I’m going to push this week to get the last of the units assembled so that next week I can move on to painting. Painting will be a long and monotonous process but I think it will go along faster than the assemble stages have gone…I hope.
Last week I was insanely busy. From Wednesday to Saturday I was really only home long enough to sleep. This week looks better although I’ll be gone this weekend to visit the in-laws. As a result I haven’t done as much work on Joe’s army as I’d like. Since the last update I have finished assembling the 17 Reserves and two 10-man Tact squads. I’m also in process on one of the Devastator squads. I’m close, I can see the end…
The Question of Primer (Ammendment)
A few weeks ago I posted about primer and mentioned Dupli-Color as my primer of choice. I’ve had a bit of a love hate relationship with Dupli-Color and the final nail in the coffin was shortly after I posted that article. My experience with it has been that the first half of the can is perfect. It goes on as it should and creates a great surface to be painted. That first half of the can is probably the best primer I’ve used ever. The second half of the can? Yeah, that’s the problem. It seems no matter how much I shake the can, how often, the temperatures and humidity I work at, the second half of the can goes on watery and coverage is terrible. So much so that I had to strip down a few figures I was working on. This has been pretty consistent for me, the second half being nowhere near as good as it should be and needing to strip down models was it for me. I’ve since been using Krylon’s black primer and have been very impressed. I had a really hard time finding it. None of the big stores carry it, Lowe’s, Home Depot, couldn’t find it at Walmart either, but I eventually found it at a local hardware store. I’ve gone through one entire can already and from start to finish it went on as it should.
I’ve made a respectable dent in the mass of infantry for Joe. I had to bounce around a bit on the units since some appear to be lacking all the parts and I’m hoping as I get to other units that I’ll find the parts I need. That and some questions I had for Joe on units I started that needed answering before I continued on those units. That being said, I primed all five in the Command squad and the 10 Veterans (both units were sent assembled), I built and primed the 10 Assault Marines, I have the 17 from the Reserve squad about 90% complete (build-wise), 10 Tacts about 75% complete and another 10 Tacts about 50% complete. I should be able to wrap up those partially completed units in the next few days and that will leave me a handful of units to go. Be on to painting soon!
I’ve decided to change my previous approach with Joe’s army. Now that the Dreads are pretty much done I’m going to keep on with the modeling side of things and jump to the infantry instead of taking a break and base coating the vehicles. I figure I may as well keep to the current process and keep my stride going even if I’m tired of gluing my fingers together and cutting my thumb.
I currently have eight of Joe’s Dreadnoughts fully assembled. The last one I just have to finish gluing an arm and it’s done. So far I have six of those Dreadnoughts primed and should have all nine of them all primed by tonight. Once the priming is done I’ll be going back to the vehicles to get a base coat on those and then all the tanks and Dreadnoughts will be complete. This will be a respectable milestone but I still have a lot left to do.
The Question of Primer
Still amazes me how many hobbyists forgo primer and will instead either paint directly on the surface or will use a matte spray paint as their base coat. I’m no expert, I can’t tell you the exact science of what makes a primer a primer, but I can tell you that it does make a difference. The short of it is that a primer adheres better to your models than normal paint and it also gives you a better surface to paint on. Primers are created to stick to the surface you’re spraying and to receive paint. By not using a primer you are only hurting yourself. Your paint is less likely to stick to the model and in turn more likely to come off either through handling or by dropping the model. Most of us seal our models and even sealed the models that were primed are less likely to chip and take damage than those which were not primed. In short, all layers of paint are adhered well to the model’s surface. If your first layer of paint is not well adhered, you didn’t use a primer, than impact could cause much larger chipping from being dropped.
Did a lot of work on Joe’s Marine stuff over the weekend and have made some solid progress. So far I have 1 Razorback, 4 Rhinos, 3 Predators and 2 Land Speeders assembled and primed. Once I pick up some more primer I’ll have another 2 Land Speeders all set, hopefully tonight. Once I have all the vehicles taken care of I’ll be moving on to the Dreadnoughts. I want to get the larger models out of the way first and then move on to all the infantry.
So far I’ve built a Predator and two Rhinos for Joe. I’ve got a lot left to go but making steady progress!
As previously mentioned, I’m assembling and doing some paint work for Joe on his Space Marine company. The large box full of stuff showed up yesterday and I got a start on putting together a few Predators. It’s going to be a long process but it will be quite the accomplishment to have done a full company. There’s also some nice Forge World stuff in there, a few Dreadnoughts and Red Scorpions. I haven’t gone completely through everything yet, there’s just so much!
Painting an Army
Painting. There’s nothing quite like seeing two fully painted armies face off in a game, especially if there’s some nice scenery. The combination of painted armies and a nice looking table really adds a layer of fun for me, it’s almost real. No longer are we pushing around plastic and metal models and rolling dice, we’re two generals facing off on the field of battle. Then there’s the armies that never see a paint brush that ruin it all.
