Battle Report: Chaos Space Marines vs Blood Angels

Last night my opponent Steve wanted to run his Blood Angels one last time under the current codex. We played a 1,750 game with the Maelstrom of War mission Cloak and Shadows. I brought along my Warpsmith list I’ve been goofing off with, which was:

Chaos Space Marines – 1,750

  • Grimtech: Warpsmith – Bolt Pistol, Power Axe, Mark of Nurgle, Aura of Dark Glory, Blight Grenades, Melta Bombs

  • Chaos Space Marines (9) – Meltagun x 1, Icon of Vengeance
    • Aspiring Champion – Meltabomb
    • Rhino
  • Chaos Space Marines (10) – Plasma Gun x 2, Icon of Vengeance
    • Aspiring Champion – Meltabomb
    • Rhino
  • Cultists (10) – Autoguns, HeavyStubber
    • Cultist Champion – Shotgun

Fast Attack

  • Spawn (5) – Mark of Nurgle

Heavy Support

  • Maulerfiend – Power Fist x 2, Lasher Tendrils
  • Defiler – Battle Cannon, Reaper Autocannon, Twin-linked Heavy Flamer, Power Fist x 2, Dirge Caster
  • Obliterators (3) – Veterans of the Long War, Mark of Nurgle

Formation: Mayhem Pack

  • Helbrute – Power Fist w/Heavy Flamer, Multi-melta
  • Helbrute – Power Fist w/Heavy Flamer, Multi-melta
  • Helbrute – Power Fist w/Heavy Flamer, Multi-melta

The only difference with this than my previous version is I dropped the Heldrake for five Spawn of Nurgle. Having the Heldrake and Mayhem Pack in reserves was proving to be a detriment to my early game so I wanted something else that started on the board and had speed. You can’t go wrong with Nurgle Spawn.

I got to setup first with Steve giving it to me. Steve setup leaving Dante with an Assault Squad to deep strike and his assault cannon Predator set to outflank. Here’s some shots of our deployment.

Deployment Shot #1Deployment Shot #2

Turn #1

First turn I basically shuffled up the board center. My Defiler managed to destroy a Razorback (or was it a Rhino?), on the left flank. My Obliterators tried to light up those disembarked Marines with plasma cannons and killed off four.

DefilerSteve’s turn had a lot of bad luck with shooting but he did put a glancing hit on my Defiler. His Vindicator also landed a nice shot on my Obliterators and removed two while the other took a wound from something else that fired on them.

The Vindicator lines up a devastating shot.

Turn #2

For the first time ever, my Helbrutes arrived on turn #2. Of course, it wasn’t all good and two Helbrutes  managed to mishap and were placed by Steve in the back left corner of my deployment zone. The one that did land correctly took out a Razorback. My Spawn charged the Vindicator and wrecked it.

HelbruteSpawn vs VindicatorOn Steve’s turn Dante arrived with the Assault Squad right on the left flank behind my disembarked Chaos Marines. Between flamers and bolt pistol shots I lost six Marines. His outflanking Predator got in behind my Maulerfiend and blew a power fist off him. Mephiston charged into my Spawn with force up and removed two Spawn. I don’t think I managed a wound at all that turn.

Turn #3

My CSM on the left flank, that Dante and crew whittled down, jumped back into their Rhino and moved away. My Defiler lined up a nice juicy shot on Dante and his squad and…missed. Battle cannons always miss those perfect shots. The Maulerfiend charged into Mephiston to aid the Spawn and put a wound on Mephiston. Mephiston whiffed so I still had my three Spawn.

Mephiston CombatDante’s group advanced on my Defiler and CSM in a Rhino, the ones they hurt earlier. A Tactical Squad with meltaguns also moved on my Rhino and took it out. Dante’s group then charged the Defiler and CSM squad. The CSM squad was destroyed while the Defiler took out a few Marines. Mephiston failed to get force up this turn and ended up losing combat and running.

Here comes Dante!

Turn #4 – 6

Steve had been running a few point lead on me. I would catch up in points on my turn but then on his, the bottom, he would get ahead again.

In the board center I was eventually able to remove the Assault Squad and Dante with the combined effort of my Warpsmith, and the CSM he was with, and a Helbrute that finally managed to lumber up the board.

The board center gets interesting.

Steve finally killed off my Spawn but not before they also took out a Predator in his deployment zone. My Maulerfiend was in a combat I needed to win against some Marines but just couldn’t kill them off. They were on an objective I had a card for and had had for a few turns.

Maulerfiend vs Marines
Poor gimpy Maulerfiend missing an arm.

I had Steve bruised and beaten but he had the points and I just couldn’t get an edge on him. The game ended with Steve winning, I believe, 15 – 12.

The game was great. I was doing well all game long, and my list really held up well, but with the Helbrute mishap, and a few bad card draws, I couldn’t pull it together. Steve really had some bad luck with his shooting all game long with all of his lascannons either not hitting or when they hit rolling 1’s. It did help offset my two of my Helbrutes being useless most of the game.

Overall I think I played the game well and can’t see anything glaring I would have done differently. Steve is always a tough opponent and he played his final game with Blood Angels under this codex well.

  • Poor hellbrutes…you can do it guys!

    • Some day they’ll make daddy proud!

In this game it was one of those Helbrutes that had the mishap who squished Dante. So, they were slow in getting to the action but at least one proved its worth.

      • You should add some flare to that hellbrute. I don’t know what the chaos equivalent to a purity seal is, but he should get something from squashing dante!!!

        • Good idea but it was my loyalist Dreadnought I was using as a stand-in for a Helbrute. However, when I finally buy a new Helbrute I can do something there.

Love the pictures in this post. Great angles and POV shots. :)

    • Thanks. City boards make for some great shots.
