Battle Report: Forces of Chaos vs Blood Ravens

Last week, in my continuing effort to prepare for this month’s 1,750 tournament, I got to play-test my list. The list was the same as before, with the exception that I dropped the Exalted Reward on the Herald for another psychic mastery.

My opponent, Steve, had his Space Marines. If I recall correctly, Steve had: Captain w/Bike, Bike Squad (6), Tactical Marines (5) x 2 w/Rhinos, Devastators w/Rhino, Whirlwinds (2), Predators (2), Knight Titan (forget the variation).

The Game

We decided to try the Compel Maelstrom of War mission I created. I got to set up first, and also got first turn.

I advanced slowly. I broke the Bikes with Soulgore (Lord), down the left flank while most everything swung up the right flank, though the my Knight came down the center. My shooting put a hull point on the Knight and a Predator.

Steve moved his Knight to intercept my Bikes and unloaded on them. I lost 3 or 4 Bikes as a result. The Whirlwinds went for the Daemonettes, and killed off one. A unit of my Spawn came under fire and took a few wounds. Steve’s Knight then tried to charge my Bikes and failed.

I believe the score was something like 2-1, my lead.

I continued my right advance, but still biding my time. My Bikes continued up the left flank, trying to get at the Whirlwinds. I had pulled the card for Supremacy (2 objectives and twice as many as my opponent), and set myself to get that. I don’t recall any amazing shooting, though I believe my Knight got a glance on Steve’s Knight. My Knight then tried to charge his but failed. A unit of Spawn did charge a Predator though and destroyed it. I managed Supremacy, and the Compel card Steve gave me, picking up around 5pts that turn, so 7-1 my lead.

Steve’s Bikes failed to come in. On the right he advanced his Tact Marines who then shot and blew up my Rhino there. On my left, Tacts disembarked their Rhino and put two hull points on my Forgefiend. The rest of Steve’s shooting saw a few Daemonettes die and a Spawn. His Knight got his charge off this time against my Bikes. Every Bike was destroyed, leaving just Soulgore, who did slap on a meltabomb and took off a hull point. Steve picked up some points, for what I don’t recall, bringing the points to 5-7 (roughly), my lead.

Knight Charges Bikes

I continued to draw cards for objectives in Steve’s deployment zone. I sent forward my Herald and Screamers, who had been holding back, as well as a unit of Spawn. I changed direction with my Knight to clear the Marines near the board center, which he did with shooting and a subsequent charge. On the right, my Daemonettes got into the Marines who took out my Rhino, and destroyed them. I think I managed 1pt. Soulgore weathered the Knight attacks, amazingly, and put another hull point on the Knight.

Steve’s Bikes failed to come in again. Things get fuzzy from here. I really should have written this sooner. Soulgore did manage to kill the Knight with meltabombs, but later died to bolter fire. Steve had charged two units into my Knight and eventually dragged it down, but not without serious losses on his part. The Bikes did finally arrive for Steve on turn #4, and they took out my 5-man CSM squad with grav weapons. Steve had closed the gap on points and taken the lead. I had to snag three objectives, which could see me take the lead, but I couldn’t manage. My Spawn and Screamers, with Herald, just could not kill off 5 Devastators on an objective. My Daemonettes failed a charge against his Bike squad on another objective I needed.

Steve took the win 14-8.

Get the Rhino


A great game. With my early lead, and Steve’s terrible dice rolling early on, I thought I would pull it off. Ultimately it was a few failed charges that was my demise. Had my Knight made his charge against Steve’s Knight then the game may have gone differently, but I’m not complaining. Steve did damn well to climb back into the game and take the win.

My list itself did well, no complaints there. I probably should have been more aggressive early on, but I knew when his Bikes came in that they’d be tough to deal with. I figured his Bikes would arrive sooner than turn #4, hence me holding back a bit, but that hesitancy cost me.

I’ve got one more practice game before this coming Saturday to get more comfortable with the list.

    Thanks for the batrep. I tried to commit to memory and use photos to fill in the blanks. I take quick notes now and it helps tremendously than trying to remember what happened.

    • I usually try and get shots of each player turn, which really helps me remember what happened when. The problem though is that sometimes I’m just so wrapped up in the game that I forget :(
