Chaos Land Raider: the Sculpting Has Begun (WIP #2)

I had shown the rough shape this Land Raider is in week, and I mentioned my plan for it. Well, I started on that plan. Though I haven’t gotten as far along as I’d like, I figured I’d show what I have done.

Obviously it’s still very early work. At this point I’m feeling out where I want to work elements in. While I want to make the Land RaiderĀ all mutated and daemonic, I also don’t want to overdo it either.

One thing I’m trying to do with the sculpting is work in elements of each god. The eye on the top is for Tzeentch. The pod-like thing on the lascannon shield is for Slaanesh. I modeled that after the legs on the Greater Daemon/Keeper of Secrets model. There’s a pretty obvious sign to Nurgle on one of the doors. However, I’m not sure what to do for Khorne. Maybe I could sculpt a skull emerging from the hull or something. I’m open to ideas.

You might have noticed that I added a few bullet holes, as well as a few deep gouges to the hull. I’ll probably add a few more damaged areas like that as I go.

At the moment I’m at a bit of a standstill. I ordered a Tentacle Maker last week, and I’m waiting for it to arrive. The elements I add with the Tentacle Maker will stand out quite a bit, so I want to work those in early, and then balance it out once I see the bigger picture. Hopefully it arrives any day now.

Well, that’s it for now. Maybe next week I’ll have made more significant progress.

  • That is a good looking start chief, nice sculpting. The only thing I could say was the sculpted bits need to blend into the flat panels a bit more. Show veins and such reaching put from them perhaps?

    • I will be blending them in more for sure. I figured I’d work the element itself in, determine if I liked it, and then finish it off later. So yeah, far more integration to come soon.

      • Ah great, I should have guessed. Looking forward to seeing the progression.

  • Maybe for Khorne, just have the battle-damaged bits bleeding? The mixture of biological and mechanical has kind of always been a thing of Khorne’s.

    • It’s an option. The whole biological + mechanical has kind of been spread to Chaos in general though, IE: Heldrakes, Forgefiends, and Maulerfiends.

      • True. I guess I kind of lost track of that since I doubled down on the biomechanical thing for my KDK. Guess all I can think of other than that is the old standby of skulls.

        • I’ll have to give it some more thought. I should probably look at Khorne specific vehicles (Forge World), to draw some inspiration.

    I think for Khorne I’d go for a stylised skull, not quite as stylised as Khorne’s icon but more a cross between a skull and his icon.
    I realise you’re going for subtle nods to the gods but the Slaanesh bit is a bit too subtle IMO (although you might be planning on painting it more Slaaneshi, in which case please ignore my suggestion). I’d go for a claw or horned image to symbolise Slaanesh or maybe flesh being stretched by a hook/chain?
    Damn, I like your idea, it’s stoking the fires……looking forward to seeing more mate.

    • A stylized skull could work for sure.

      Of course, you focus on the Slaanesh piece. Sheesh! That’s not done. I plan to add to it, though I haven’t decided just what yet. Maybe I could do small blades coming off it, or do the stretched skin (like you said) where it comes off that piece and blends out.

      So yeah, mostly just laying down groundwork at this stage with detailing to come.
