Thor’s Workbench: Karanak (PIP #1)

I’m taking a quick break from my Defiler I’m working on. I’ve made a ton of progress on it but I’m getting a bit burned-out. So, I thought I would work on my Karanak model. Obviously this isn’t the Games Workshop model and honestly I forget whose model it is, though I’m leaning towards Reaper. I really liked the model and I’m not a fan of the 3-headed Karanak GW model, so here we are.

I still have a ways to go on this model but most of the hard parts are done. It’s really hard to pick up in these shots but right now I have two layers of gray on the skin. The base gray is a really dark grey, Eshin Grey by GW. It’s damn close to black and it’s what I wanted since I want this black but to have some layering as well. The highlight on that is Cold Grey, a Vallejo color. I’ll hit the highest points from here with yet another grey and the skin will be done.

My Flesh Hounds are done in a more traditional Khorne Red, so if you’re wondering why I went with a black skin, that’s why, so he stands out from the Flesh Hounds since his size and features aren’t vastly different from theirs. Plus, I like to try different stuff.

The fur is not done. It’s just base coated and washed. I’ll layer this up to a Blood Red.

I’m happy with how this is coming along and it’s a nice break from the larger Defiler project.

Update: Karanak is now painted. Check out the Karanak painting showcase.

Yup, that is a Reaper mini. Hell Hound (03609).
Looks good. I bet it’ll really stand out once the mane is done.

    • Thought so. I usually browse all those blisters packs every few weeks looking for something cool.

Thanks. Yeah, the mane will tie things together and then getting the horns and teeth picked out will give it some much needed contrast.

Reaper has some really great models in their ranges. This would have been a good three-headed version:

        • I like everything about that model except the three heads. It’s hard to make a model with more than one head and not have it look awkward, in my opinion anyway, and that one is awkward.

          • I agree. A three headed creature needs to be broader across the chest and have enough mass in the body to avoid looking too front heavy.

Anyway, your Karanak stand in looks pretty good so far.

            • Exactly and thanks. Hope to have him done for tomorrow so I can see how a painted Karanak performs. Of course my model debuts once they get painted tend to be lackluster. Go figure.

I have one of those from the first Reaper Bones kickstarter. Just looking at it the other day since it also its in to my chainmail stuff as a Hell Hound since that is what it is.

    • It’s a cool model for sure. It’s a very simple model but that’s what I like about it.
