Thor’s Workbench: Heldrake – Homestretch (WIP#5)

HeldrakeProgress continues on the Heldrake. It is by far the most annoying model I’ve painted but I’m just sucking it up and plowing through it. That’s not to say I’m not enjoying it but there are so many tedious elements to this model that it’s just painful at times.

Anyway, here’s some shots of the body. I have the armor elements in place. I still have to do another coat on the metal since that’s just the base color I go over, but it’s looking like something now.

As always, my WIP shots kind of suck :P

I’m still debating the more fleshy parts of the model. All the hoses are organic and there’s flesh around the legs. The bone-like areas will be done that way, as bone, but the fleshy bits I’m not sure on yet. One thing I considered is doing all those areas like muscle. I have a muscle technique I really like that I think will fit in here. So, all the hoses and flesh would be done that way to pull it all together as opposed to hoses one color, flesh another.

Any cool basing ideas? It is such a giant dead space it almost needs some wrecked Rhino or something.

    • I honestly haven’t given it much thought yet. Once I get this bird done I can relax and put some thought to the basing.

Why don’t you do a color by color on your muscle technique? Always interested in others techniques.

        • All I do is a white base coat and wash it heavily twice with a red wash. It creates a blood like color in the depths while being more pink elsewhere. It’s what I did on my Spawn. Simple and effective.

  • It’s looking good so far! Even though it’s a pain in the ass to paint, it’s also a model that will add a lot of pop to your army overall.

The exposed muscle idea sounds good. It will lend a nice contrast to the mechanical portions and tie it in nicely with the rest of your army by linking it to your spawn and obliterators. It sounds like your muscle technique is fairly quick, so it will also give you one part of the model that didn’t take days to plow through!

    • Thanks.

Last night I managed to get the final coat of the metal on there, touched up what needing touching up and washed the whole thing. Now I need to get the skin done, the bone elements and some details.

Yeah, the muscle part will be easy and so will the bone. Once I clean up the blue from the washing it should be smooth sailing.
