Tournament Report: Disciples of Twilight @ 1,500

Khorne IconThis past Saturday was a 1,500 40K tournament. I decided to try something different and bring along a Khorne heavy force. The list is here but bear in mind it was built for fun, not optimized competitive play.

I wanted to get a Land Raider in my list to check it out. I had previously tried it once before and that’s never much of an evaluation. I also just had to the urge to put down the Khorne units I had into a single list to see what would happen *shrugs*

My first game was against Imperial Guard with the focus on objectives. His list was pretty infantry heavy and backed up by some tanks. The first two turns saw me take a serious pounding from shooting. My Spawn unit was down to a single Spawn, I had three Hounds left and they were locked in combat and my Bloodletters were limping along with around three of them left. It wasn’t looking good with most of my assault threats neutralized. However, I did get my troops where I needed them. Then I finally hit his lines with what I had left.

Soulgore took out two 10-man infantry squads on his own before going down. My Maulerfiend rampaged a Leman Russ, a Mortar Team and a small infantry squad trying to hold his only objective. My Chaos Marines took out an infantry squad in combat as well. By the end of the game I had claimed more objectives but with the other points to be earned the final score ended up at 25-10 in my favor.

Next game was against Grey Knights with Iron Hands as allies. The mission focus was a central objective we needed to grab. This was one of those games where nothing goes right at all for various reasons. ultimately I underestimated his list and did not commit enough resources where they were needed and paid dearly for it. I took an ass kicking here with a score of 26-6.

Final game was against Necrons. It wasn’t a flying circus but more of a nod to the old phalanx style Necrons in the previous codex. This was a straight up brawl. I hit a large 20-man squad of Necrons with a Lord and the spider-dude on turn #2 with Hounds, Spawn and Soulgore and rolled it. I basically drove my army into the center of his. I would try to assault and he would rapid fire the hell out of me. The game was neck and neck until the bottom of the final turn. His Monolith killed off my last two Berzerkers and then snap-fired and glanced the last hull point off my Land Raider. He rolled four dice with 6’s to hit, got I think two, and then got one 6 from there, game over. Those last two kill points gave him the primary mission; so close! The final score was 18-13 in his favor.

Only one win on the day but ultimately three good games. At least I scored in each game and I have had worse showings. The big take-away for me was that the Chaos Land Raider may be the worst one going but it’s still an AV14 vehicle with four hull points and not worthless. In the second game it went down to a Stormraven who nuked it with a multi-melta. I lost it in that last game and that was on turn #6 to a long shot scenario. So, I may start adding in the LR now and then, especially since I now own one :)

As for the Khorne focus, meh. I’m all for an aggressive style of play but I don’t see doing such a Khorne heavy focus again. It was something I had to do though, to get it out of my system, and I’m glad I did.

As the IG player, I can say it was a scary list. Lots of close combat threats. You punished me appropriately for ignoring the primary…. Working on adding something that can push forward. Over all I liked my list, and focusing on the missions allowed me to win my next two games and pick up second place.

IG is a nice change of pace from death wing! Glad to start playing after a ten year break.

Yeah, I have often focused on killing until too late when I realized that it did not coincide with mission objectives. Surprised to hear that from you. I have played you multiple times and you are generally VERY methodical.

Lol, combination of sleep deprivation (3 hours a night for the past two weeks), inexperience with IG and tossing the list together at 3 am with a fussy infant. I think an =I= with storm troopers might work for a midfield unit, rad and psi grenades should help…..

        • khorneinquisitor

Your storm troopers paid off well against me and took down my contemptor that one game.

    • I was definitely using my assault threats as a screen for my troops but when I started losing them so easily I didn’t think it was going to work.

I think you had a solid list. Putting Vets in a Chimera could help you out as well, being able to push up,

Sounds like you had a great time! Glad to see you added a banner of blood. Do you feel it benefited you at all? Who did you put Karanak with? I will have to pick your brain on allying daemons with CSM as I have had very little luck with it, and getting ka-rushed every damn game is just no fun…and that is the most common result for my CSM and CD ally lists. (unless I run a screamer star….which is gay. :P )

    • I didn’t use the banner once. In 2 of the games the unit was just shot to death and in the last I was on top of him already. I put Karanak with the Letters in the first game but with the Hounds the rest because I wanted to deep strike in the Letters in hopes of them surviving.

I’ve had good luck with Daemons and CSM together. I won’t say I have it all figured out though but generally I do better with them as an ally than without.
