April Tournament: Tau Test List Version 2

This has grown out of my previous incarnation of my list as an attempt to get more delaying units and more plasma shots in my army. While still not an “internet approved” list, it is alot better for our local meta than the first list I think.

HQ
Shas’el – plasma, missile, multi 87
2 Shas’vre – plasma, missile, multis 144
3 Fireknives – plasma, missile, multi 186
3 Fireknives – plasma, missile, multi 186
3 Fireknives – plasma, missile, multi 186
6 Firewarriors – 60
Devilfish – sms, burst, multi, dispod, target array 120
10 Kroot – 7 hounds 112
10 Kroot – 7 hounds 112
2 Piranhas – fusion, target array, dispod x1, flechettes x1 155
2 Piranhas – fusion, target array, dispod x1, flechettes x1 155
Railhead – railgun, burst cannons, dispod, multi-tracker 165
Railhead – railgun, burst cannons, dispod, multi-tracker 165
Railhead – railgun, burst cannons, dispod, multi-tracker 165

It’s got alot of plasma to deal with the current Descent of Angels craze at our store, while still maintaining some good mobility. The Kroot are there to die (slowly) therefore saving my suits and tanks. Standard Tau tactics really. It’s mech tau with some kroot bastards thrown in.

  • So much plasma…I dig it. I think it’s got a balance the previous versions were missing. From the standpoint of a Marine player, not a list I’d want to try and tackle.

Your really gonna want a unit of Pathfinders to help down that one unit that maybe piercing the kroot bubble. Also 2 Railheads with 2 Broadsides that have ASS and one with a targetlock to split fire sitting in the back field with clear LOS is money, also give them shield drones so Insta-gib shots can be placed on them.

Thanks for the suggestions, but I usually run a mech-hybrid list with the stuff you just mentioned. Trying something different. There is less mech at our FLGS and more mobile infantry/deep striking.

Pathfinders, Broadsides, and the static units are extremely vulnerable in our meta.

I think you’re going to find that three Railguns just isn’t enough to deal with enemy armor- it’s fine for Land Raiders and such, since you won’t see many of those, but you actually want to be firing Railguns at stuff like Rhinos as well. I would try and squeeze 3-6 Broadsides in there if you could.

DPod on the Piranhas I have found, more and more, to be unnecessary- they’re either within 12″ or going Flat Out. Cheap, though. I suppose Flechettes aren’t a bad choice, but I don’t like them on expendable vehicles like that.

Targeting Array for your bodyguard would be a help, but not sure if you’ll have points for it. Worth looking at, though.

Looks like a pretty tight list overall, though.
