The Hall Of Heroes: 2k No-Holds-Barred Warhammer 40k Tournament

The Hall Of Heroes

Hardcore Warhammer40k In Sparks, Nevada

Hello and Happy Howlidays everyone! For me Warhammer 40k Tournaments each are like a good book – I get deeply engrossed within each one and then BAM its all over and I have a hangover for a week. That means last week in addition to stuffing myself full of Thanksgiving goodness I was also in the serious process of recovering from the Wolfbrothers’ latest incursion into California at the end of the year Contest of Champions. Next week I will be deeply involved with getting ready for and competing in the next installment of our local no-holds-barred “Hall Of Heroes” escalation Tournament series!

GenKev

General Kevin of Wolfbrothers – current series Leader and Champion!

No Holds Barred?

The current Sixth Edition Season of The Hall Of Heroes series has been run not strictly by-the-book but straight from the book! Meaning all horrible stuff like Allies, Fortifications, Mysterious Terrain and Objectives, Warlord Traits, Secondary Objectives, and ALL of the Book Missions as well as 2nd Force org chart and Forgeworld approved units AND player placed terrain straight from the Big Rule Book is to be expected and allowed! On Sunday Dec 9th at 11am in Sparks, Nevada at Heroes Games & Hobbies the 2000pt Hall Of Heroes Tournament will rage once again. It will be many of our general’s first taste of the forbidden world of 2xFoC, and at least of now one of the rare occasions we will have such a chance.

Expertly Painted sDm Kabal

THE ShotDownMind Murder Fleet and Rowdy Beasts

The sDm Kabal

Since the tiny days of 500pt Escalation League at Heroes nearly two years ago I have been  building, painting and playing Dark Eldar and love the crazy evil elves. At first I just wanted to scratch build some of the models and units that were not released with the Codex. After just a few games I learned of the true power of PAIN and haven’t been able to really play much Slower or less Evil since. I am the evil Dark Eldar player anyways and have represented the Kabal in each of the Hall of Heroes Tournaments… ever. Despite supposed competitive weaknesses and the crap offered in the Eldar Codex as allies I continue to throw down the Murder on the table tops with the dark kin.

Crapworld Kin

Although I am feeling that New Army Itch something strong – nothing, even of the armies I collected just because over the last year will be ready by next week. Even the projects I am starting on in regards to the new Chaos Space Marines and soon to be had Dark Angels in preparation for the Bay Area Open are just pipe dreams for the most part at this point in time. I mean Im not going to be caught dead walking into a tournament with my army unfinished let alone unpainted! The ShotDownMind Kabal will hold the line and bring the scary murderness to the tables once again.

Beasts

The Rowdy Beasts

To Beasts or No To Beasts

At 2000pts everyone with an expert-hat loves to talk about crazy spam doomsday lists that rarely even materialize on the walls of the internets let alone actually show up on a tabletop. Its really a cut-throat points level with full allies and even forgeworld units throw into the mix. Options in all directions open up like a candy store but the points – Those damn points just don’t go that far on the spam doomsday shopping list.

For what I have been doing with the Dark Eldar in Sixth Edition recently, the first and most important question of ultimate list build is to bring the Beasts or not.  My answers so far have been almost a split. When I can afford the beasts I bring them, so I haven’t  fielded them on  actual event day much at less than 2000pts this season. At the highest competitive level I have found the unit to be invaluable, especially against current popular threats like Tzeech Demon lists or Necron Airforce.

cronair

CronAir might be there!

At the Hall Of Heroes I haven’t considered them nearly as valuable because of the metagame. It’s a small local tournament. The chances of a Tzeech Demon list showing up that day is almost zero and the Airforce might possibly make a showing.  Everything else will be almost undoubtedly be a mixture of Tau, Sisters, Ig, Space Marines, Tyranids, or Chaos Space Marines.  Maybe some Grey Knights or Space Wolves, Maybe! Not dragging the rowdy beast unit to the party opens up a lot of points of firepower goodness that can be of great use at this turkey shoot! Like all the Void Ravens and Poison Boats and Ravagers and Venoms with blasterborn inside that I want, or some mixture…

General Kevin’s Sisters of Battle, clobbering fools since… whenever!

Other Choices

The other main listbuilding decisions have to do with bringing a second 10-man Kabal Warrior unit in a raider (Poison Boasts) vs a second Void Raven Bomber, and then warrior-blaster units or wych-haywire units in venoms.  Both of these questions are binding on the points balance in the list and the flow/strategy on the tabletop to win each mission.  In the list variants that include the Beast Units, these particular secondary listbuilding considerations are the final and most important ones.  The Beast Unit only really being up for auction because of the options available at 2k (2nd FoC) and the lack of marauding Demon lists (or other real deepstriking madness) at the event – although the scariness and pure utility of the Beast Unit is always hard to leave at home.

poison boats

Poison Boats are so clutch!

These list options for me become the real life or death sleep depriving last minute decisions when the points shrink to 1750 and the venue becomes something more deadly like as I will discuss more in my On The Road to Bay Area Open GT series.

List Options

So here are my initial list variants going into the last week before the tournament. Keep in mind the important questions from above, the first and most important concerning the Beast Unit, and then the less important considerations regarding the Poison Boats vs Void Ravens and 5man Warriors vs Wyches.

The Beast Unit ultimately nets me a couple more points in paint for conversions / kit bashing – also. What do you think? What do you have going on at 2k 2xFoC???

  • TheRhino

Can’t give much feedback ont he army lists, but those Khymerae and Razorwing Flock conversions are neat. Dark Eldar players always come up with the most twisted conversions for their models.

  • http://creativetwilight.com/ Thor

Agreed. That’s a good looking army you have there.

  • SCP Yeeman

Love the lists my Dark Kin brother! I will be playing around with the Beast unit as well for BAO. its gives the most utility for the points I believe. Takes on anything, scores in two missions and helps against Daemons.
Need to grab some models and get it going. Good luck this weekend and bring the MURDER!
