There Are No Wolves on Fenris – Chaos vs Space Wolves

After having watched three rounds of fun gaming on Saturday for Fratris Salutem, it was my time to get in a game. I really wanted to spend some time working on a list, but time got the better of me. So, I put together a 1,750 list based mostly on my previous 1,500 list.

Disciples of Twilight: Chaos Space Marines – 1,750

  • Grimtech: Warpsmith – Mechatendrils, Bolt Pistol, Power Axe, Mark of Nurgle, Aura of Dark Glory, Blight Grenades, Melta Bombs, Gift of Mutation

    • Rhino – Dozer Blade, Dirge Caster
  • Cultists (10) – Autoguns, Heavy Stubber
    • Champion – Shotgun, CCW

    • Champion – Autopistol, CCW

Fast Attack

  • Chaos Bikes (8) – Veterans of the Long War, Meltagun x 2
    • Champion – Gift of Mutation, Melta bombs

Heavy Support

  • Maulerfiend – Lasher Tendrils
  • Maulerfiend – Lasher Tendrils
  • Devastation: Obliterators (3) – Veterans of the Long War

Lord of War

  • Chaos Knight Errant – Ion Shield, Heavy Stubber, Thermal Cannon, Foe-reaper Chainsword, Dirge Caster, Daemon Knight of Tzeentch

I was floating a handful of points, and didn’t have time to optimize the list, so I grabbed some Gifts of Mutation for fun.

My opponent, Alex, ran something like: Iron Priest w/Wolf, Rune Priest w/Wolf x 4 (Brotherhood of Silliness), Wolf Guard w/Wolf x 4, Knight, (5) Blood Claws x 3 w/Drop Pod, Dreadnought x 2. It’s a list I’ve faced before, minus the Dreadnoughts, and it ran all over me last time. The deathstar with the Iron Priest, Rune Priests, and Wolf Guard is a tough nut to crack, and it just puts out the hurt.

The Game

We rolled up Cloak and Shadows (hide your cards). Alex got side choice and deployed first. I setup to get my Maulerfiends near the Knight, and my Knight to go for the deathstar. The rest just filled in between.

Sadly, I didn’t get a ton of shots in this game. Some games I just get caught up and forget to take pics.

First turn saw Alex advance his army to the board center. He had a unit of Blood Claws camping an objective in his backfield. One Drop Pod of Blood Claws landed near my Maulerfiends, but too far back to do any shooting. The other pod landed in front of my Bikes. The Brotherhood of Silliness fired up the crazy 1,000 shot psychic thing, got some glances on my Knight, but the Ion Shield saved them all.

Alex Advances

There would be no subtleness to this game, so I dove in. My Bikes blew up the Drop Pod in front of them, then my Maulerfiends both charged Alex’s Knight. Having dual Lasher Tendrils meant the Knight would have 1 attack. That attack was saved, and the Maulers put 3 hull points on the Knight. Then came the Stomp and a 6, both Maulers gone. My Knight had failed a charge on the deathstar :(

Maulerfiends vs Knight

I’ll be honest, the rest of this game is easy to summarize, another reason for the lack of pictures. His Knight ran all over my right flank, and eventually decided to charge my Obliterators who had previously deep struck in, and put a hull point on him. The Obliterators held up, lost one, and they smashed down the Knight with their Power Fists. The same turn, Alex’s deathstar also dragged down my Knight.

I continued to throw units at his deathstar, slowly whittling it away, but never killing it off entirely. It didn’t matter though, with the deathstar tied up, and his small units of Blood Claws either dead, engaged in combat, or too far away to matter, I moved around the board a bit to pick up objectives and points.

The game ended on turn #5 with a Chaos victory of 6-2.

The game was a pure slug-fest. An all around great game, and I had to do a lot of thinking to pull out a win. Having faced Alex’s list before, I knew if I could just keep the Knight and deathstar from running around, that I could use my other units to scoot around and get points. Simple in theory, tougher in practice.

My Knight just hasn’t been a very effective killer for me yet. Most of the time his Thermal Cannon does nothing, and in combat the rolls never side with me. However, he does make saves like a champ, and I love having it as a Daemon Knight for the 5+ invulnerable, especially in combat. Being able to make saves does have value of course, so he’s not useless, just wish he managed to kill a bit more. I do believe I’ll try the Battle Cannon next time though. The Thermal Cannon isn’t doing me any favors, so time to mix it up.

If you go up against a lot of AV14 then the thermal cannon is good, but otherwise the two shot Battle Cannon has Ordnance to get around heavy armour so is better overall. Nice battle review and good photos

    • Thanks.

I have to agree on the Thermal Cannon. My thought was that I would be one-shotting vehicles all over the place. That’s not the reality of it though. My other thought was having the AP2 to deal with 2+ saves. The problem there is it’s often backed by an invulnerable, IE: Terminators, Storm Shields, etc, and they laugh at my AP2 shot. So, getting two Battle Cannon shots just seems like the smarter move. Potentially twice the wounds to force saves, and two hull points on vehicles – even if they aren’t exploding from one shot.

When I saw all those wolves in your opponents list, I feared the worst – and then the dreaded 6 roll on a stomp. Oh gawd, do I hate stomp…

Anyway, good work in pulling off the win – looks like a brutal and hard won victory! Nice to see there is still life in the old ‘dex yet :D

    • Stomp is rough. Easily the most brutal part of a Knight.

There is still some life in the codex, but it’s barely hanging in by this point. It’s definitely on life support right now.

  • Chaos wins again? Get out of here! Started working on that article praising the competitiveness of the CSM codex yet? ;)

    Great bat rep as always.

    • Well, I didn’t do a report last week when they got beat down, so… :P

  • Personally I plan on going the twin battle cannon shot route because pie plates are fun.

Loving the twin maulerfiends then? They got hard luck there.

    • I’m sure I’ll like dual Maulers, how could I not? But, they had a tough game. Either those Maulers were going to drag down the Knight, or the Knight was going to do what he did. It was a gamble.

      • The had pretty good odds though, they lost because one isn’t fully painted I am sure. ;)

        • Hell, it’s not even fully put together yet. It’s when they get painted that they start playing like crap because it’s irony, and Chaos loves irony.
