Making Tracks: Casting tread plates for my Rebel Grots

Hello all,

Anyone who has scratch built tanks knows that the tracks are a particular issue.  Making them individually is a mind breaking exercise in tedium.  In the past I’ve done this and have gone it’s a matter of finding the level of detail you’ll be happy enough with without sacrificing your sanity (most scratch-builders are skirting the edge already!)  Buying GW or third party bits can net you much better details for considerably less frustration.  I seriously considered this approach, I think I can get away with about $10 per tank which is still a bargain when you consider the total monetary investment per model.  In the end I decided to try my hand at casting my own tracks instead.

Gaming & Hobby Stagnation

DepressedMan, I’ve been in a funk lately with the hobby and gaming. I suppose it was bound to happen eventually. I’ve been going strong with 40K for 7-years now and for some reason or another I’ve just been very “meh” about stuff. It’s not disinterest in the game, I’m still playing weekly and enjoying it, but I think it’s just a culmination of a few things.

Second Basilisk for Rebel Grots (Scratch Build)

This gallery contains 17 photos.

Hello all,

Although I was fairly productive last week I haven’t made a lot of progress on the tanks.  I took some time one evening to try out a lasgrot conversion that was stuck in my mind.  I took another evening to clean up some Sisters of Battle, which I’ll feature in a post later this week.  I did manage to spend some time on the second Basilisk for the Rebel Grots.

Rebel Grot quick conversion

Hello all,

Since there are very few actual Rebel Grot models I need to do a lot of conversions to build a full army.  I try to keep most of these simple so that I’ll actually be able to get them all done.  So far I’ve used 2nd ed gretchin with small green-stuff mods, and I’ve used fantasy grots with 40k equipment.  I’ve also used some of Necromunda starter box models as a source of weapons.

Tanks for the Rebel Grots!

Hello all,

I managed a bit of progress on the tanks for my Rebel Grots.  They are coming together nicely and I’m quite happy with them so far.  I made it down to the shop for a test game with my 1500pt Rebel Grot list, and I also made it to the monthly tournament with my Orks/allied grots.  Overall a busy week from the gaming perspective.  Let’s start with the tanks:

Rebel Grots Infantry Yellow 2 complete…and tanks!

This entry is part 14 of 14 in the series Rebel Grot Infantry Yellow Platoon

Hello all,

I’ve decided to try and get the Rebel Grots ready for the Fratris Salutem, a hobby event here in Maine scheduled for May.  Allies are not allowed so the only way for me to field these guys is to knock out a full 1500 point army of them.  It’s going to be a push but I’ve got my orks as a back up so the price of failure is naught but pride.  I’ve buckled down over the last week and made some pretty good progress.  The second infantry squad is complete and I’ve started on some tanks.

The Bride and Groom… from Hell

baph 1aI’ve been carrying these two around for years and I FINALLY spent about 5 hours getting them done today.  Meet Baphemut and Cassandra, my greater daemon and/or daemon prince model!  Baph is an old-school GW minotaur I got for cheap (cuz he’s so old) and Cassy is an old-school Dark Elves slave girl.  I just thought it’d be really cool to make this big blue monster with a hotty girl friend stretched out like a cat in heat on his base.

Rebel Grots: Infantry Squad 2 amost complete

This gallery contains 9 photos.

This entry is part 12 of 14 in the series Rebel Grot Infantry Yellow Platoon

Hello all,

I’m still chugging along on Infantry Squad Yellow II for my Rebel Grots army.  With the home improvement efforts wrapped up for not I have been able to make some decent progress this week.  At this point I’m about 95% finished with the squad and expect to be done some time this week.

Bitz Boyz

SL732263I bought a box full of ork boyz on Ebay a while back and finally decided to put some together for a 1000pt game this weekend.  I bought them to be an ally mob for my Eldar and Dark Eldar – seemed like a good excuse to invest in some green brawlers.  My list is basically a Warboss, a big mob of Boyz, and a unit of Kommandos to outflank or infiltrate with.  This weekend I just needed to get 15 boyz with a nob done and I accomplished that and then some.

Rebel Grots: Infantry squad Yellow 2 PIP

Hello all,

The home improvement efforts continue but I did manage to get some painting time in this week.  I’m batch painting the grunts and weapon crew.  So far I’ve made it through the skin tones and laid the base for the blacks and blues.  It’s enough that they’re starting to take shape.

Homemade Thunderfire Cannon

T & TFCI wanted the incredible firepower this contraption spits out (4 blast markers per turn) but didn’t really want to spend the money on the very expensive and bulky GW model.  So I started figuring out how to make my own.  I had access to lots of syringes (though not a drug addict), so I used a large syringe, sawed out the middle, sanded down the inner edges, and glued the ends back together, making the primary piece of my cannon.  I then glued vehicle kit bits on to give it more character.  The quadruple barrels are just drinking straws painted black with silver edges.  For the track I used (you guessed it) epic-scale landraiders!  Bought a handful of them for cheap on ebay.  These I stuck together using paperclip clippings.  The rocker in the middle is a turn-screw bit from my old desk (the one my then-girlfriend now-wife sat on when it was up on its side in a storage module, breaking it to smitherines – she’s not big, I swear, it was just a cheap desk).  So for literally a few bucks I had myself a very workable and decent looking engine of destruction!

Rebel Grots: Infantry Squad 2 ready for paint

This entry is part 11 of 14 in the series Rebel Grot Infantry Yellow Platoon

Hello all,

In the past week I’ve finished adding shoulder pads to the rest of Infantry Squad II.  I also added hats to a few of them, finished up their bases, and primed them for painting.  The five grunts in the front are the ones I’ve finished since the last post.

Rebel Grots: Infantry Squad 2 WIP

This entry is part 10 of 14 in the series Rebel Grot Infantry Yellow Platoon

Hello all,

Well, it has been another busy week with a lot of painting and stuff around the house so I’ve managed to go another week without any progress on the hobby front.  I did manage to take a couple of quick pictures to show you where I’m at:

Thoughts: Painting with Style

Mona Lisa - StyleThere’s no shortage of articles related to painting your miniatures that focus on technique, color theory and the like. The thing that often seems lacking in most of these articles is style. Over time we all develop a style of painting and some times we don’t even realize it. I know I had a style of painting long before I became aware of it.
