Abaddon the Despoiler (Chaos Master of Crusade) Painting Showcase

I have been plastering social media with WIP shots of this model, the Chaos Master of Crusade (counts-as Abaddon the Despoiler) who I’ve named Fane Bloodstar, over the past few weeks. Well, there will be no more WIP shots because I have finally finished painting him!

I took a TON of shots. I wanted to try to get every angle because it’s such a cool model and it has so many details.

    Basing

I have a tutorial on how to make icicles and for the snow basing done on the model for those interested.

    Thoughts

I really enjoyed painting this model. It’s the most fun I’ve had working on a model ever.

There’s so many details on the model that it really painted itself. I didn’t have to try to accomplish much other than putting the colors in the right spot. That’s what I love about models like this – they make your painting look better than it is by virtue of an awesome sculpt.

I already talked about the power sword in the tutorial, but again I’m really happy with how it came out. It creates a nice focal point for the model. Normally I would do the power claw with the same effect (on the blades), but I wanted the sword as the only focal point on this model.

Speaking of the sword, I was pretty happy with how that eye came out. I did my typical glass effect but in yellow. Normally I use red but the yellow worked here I thought.

The blonde hair was a longshot. I knew I didn’t want to do red hair, as the model has red cloth, and I knew black would just blend in too much. I thought maybe white, tried it, and I didn’t like it. So, I began playing with glazes and washes and ended up with what you see.

I know the blonde hair is atypical for Abaddon, but this is a counts-as for me, so I’m not trying to match it up anyway.

Brian on Twitter mentioned the blonde hair made him look young, and he’s right. Blonde hair is definitely something we perceive as a youthful color. That concept is fine with me. My Chaos warband is new in the grand scheme of things. So, a leader who appears youthful is fitting. Plus, I do like doing things different; even if it is just hair color.

Other than that, the rest of the model was pretty standard for me. I did try a new skull technique though, and I have to say I like it.

That’s a model truly worthy of being called warmaster. Great job, and those ice effects are stunning.

He deserves a TON of pics! Great job, I really like how you make it grim without make it too much dark. Only a great painting could make a pink sword grim!

Excellent work! A fitting centrepiece to an army as well as its leader.

Really cool model you found and he works really well as Abaddon. The painting looks great and the sword looks fantastic imo, I’ve said it before but I really like the way you paint pink, it has good depth and gives a really nice contrast :).

I am not sure I can even choose a favourite piece from that, so here a few of the things that stood out:
The sword for sure but for me the eye on the hilt looks wonderful.
The icicles hanging off the base are wonderful.
That tattered banner with the freehand on it.
    The wounds on the head.

What a fantastic paint job! You have nailed this one Thor. The model itself it great, and I really like the contrast between the pink sword and the darkness of the rest of the scheme. Base is pretty spectacular too!
