I painted these Rhinos 6+ years ago, but at the time I didn’t have a good setup for pictures so I never took any.
This past fall I did a little updating on them with some sponge weathering, and adding snow to the Rhinos to tie them into everything else in my army.
So, for the sake of completeness (getting pictures of my entire army), here they are.

Thoughts
Despite having painted these a very long time ago (6+ years is like 5 decades in painting years) I still really like them.
The freehand on there is probably my favorite part. It was the first time I really tried to do some big stuff with freehand.
I also really like how on the second Rhino I tied the black color into the blue color side by extending a freehand design into it. I think that remains one of my favorite techniques I’ve done with this army.
The small updates I did to them helped push the Rhinos forward a bit in appearance, and they fit in well with everything else I’ve done in recent years, which is all I could really ask for. I wasn’t about to completely redo them, and they didn’t need it either.
My only real gripe with them is the OSL I had done at the time. It wasn’t the first time I did OSL but it was pretty early in my learning process. I basically blended out some white and then glazed over it.
Stil. I’m generally not one to repaint things, even small elements like that, so they stayed as they are.
I have since done a tutorial on painting OSL though if you’re curious how I go about these days.
I love doing the hatch lenses as you see them, a reflective gem-like quality. I’ve got a tutorial on that if you’re curious.
I’ll be adding more shots in the coming weeks of other units like this that I never got pictures of. Stay tuned!

Crikey, they don’t look 6 years old. I really like the Chaos star bleeding into the blue on Rhino 2…..great work mate.
Thank you.
They have admittedly held up well considering their age. There’s no blending, nothing fancy (other than bad OSL), but I think that’s why it works all these years later.
I’ve never been a massive fan of OSL but I think it looks pretty good. It doesn’t swamp the model and it adds to the piece rather than detract from it.
Yeah, I also prefer more subtle OSL. It’s easy to overdo it.
They are becoming old in a very good way, and your touches to make them more modern are on the right path. What a ruler-hand for those straight lines!
Thanks!
My lines aren’t that straight the first time. It takes a few tries and then fixing the mistakes ;)
I think they look great regardless of age, the neat and tidy chaos pointed stars in the two tone and such straight lines are a great touch. I’m with you on OSL, I don’t like it except on subtle surrounds around plasma coils, but your lamps are contained to only one small part so it doesn’t detract.
Thank you.
That was my thought at the time in doing it – it’s a small area. I figured it would be a good practice spot to learn on. Funny enough, I haven’t done a headlight OSL since doing these Rhinos.
I would not have guesst that they were that old, they look great imo, you’re really getting good with the snow effects.
Thank you.
When you live where there is lots of snow, it’s pretty easy to learn how to put it on a vehicle convincingly ;)
